On Tuesday June 9, 2020, a taskforce acting on the instructions of the Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma, visited the Owerri Secretariat of the Imo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and recovered a vehicle each from the State Chairman of the party, Martins Ejiogu, and the State Secretary, Raymond Emeana.
The vehicles, one (1) JAC Truck and one (1) Innoson Truck, according to Imo PDP were donated to the party by the immediate administration of Chief Emeka Ihedioha in the state.
The party argued that it has never happened before in the history of Imo State that a ruling government will recover vehicles donated to a party by the previous government.
According to the party, Gov. Uzodinma was wrong to recover the vehicles, an action it labelled an attempt to deal ruthlessly with the opposition party.
But fresh facts have emerged that the vehicles were not donated to Imo PDP by Ihedioha, instead they were given for the use of the PDP leaders, Martins Ejiogu and Raymond Emeana, who were appointed into government offices in the Ihedioha administration.
Given this fact, Gov. Uzodinma could be said to be right to recover the vehicles from the two persons.
While Ejiogu was appointed as the Chairman of Imo State Lands Allocation Committee, Emeana served as the Chairman of the Imo State Housing Corporation, and the vehicles were given to them as appointees of the government.
However, the two government appointees failed to return the vehicles to the government of Hope Uzodinma upon its assumption of office.
It would be recalled that Chief Emeka Ihedioha had made a release in January 2020, after he was sacked as Governor of the state by the Supreme Court, urging all appointees in his administration to return government properties in their possession.
The recovered vehicles
In his reaction, a former Publicity Secretary of Imo PDP who served during the Ihedioha administration, Mr. Damian Oparah said the recovered vehicles were never a gift or a donation by the past PDP Government to Imo State Chapter of the party.
According to Oparah, the Innoson Vehicle was the official vehicle given to Emeana as the Chairman of Imo State Housing Corporation, while the JAC vehicle was given to Martins Ejiogu directly by the Jasper Ndubuaku led recovery committee of the Ihedioha administration.
Oparah alleged that Ejiogu converted the vehicle to his private use after serving as as Chairman of Imo State Land Allocation Committee.
He said Imo PDP was wrong to say that the vehicles were donated to the party.
According to him, “To tell the public that the vehicles were given to PDP as a gift by the immediate past PDP Government was not correct.
“People should be Man enough to tell the truth, everything should not be fake news mixed with propaganda,” he said.
“The Taskforce simply recovered Government vehicles in possession of appointees of previous administration, as non of the two vehicles was given or donated to PDP. We should beware of the news and information we give to the public as the law is now watching us,” Oparah added.
